The Indigo Child Project

Submitted by Ione Jenson

Based on the inspiration derived from the book: The Indigo Children by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober (Hay House 1999) a large group of men and women in and around Coeur d'Alene, Idaho have dedicated themselves to setting up a six week summer camp for children grades K-5. They have aptly named this project, The Indigo Child Project. They have been loaned a physical facility, located on several acres of land just outside Coeur d'Alene, where the children will come from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will be three sessions, each consisting of two weeks. Children may come for any or all two week sessions. A vast number of people from the community have volunteered to come in as resource people, teachers and supportive adults to make this a vibrant and enriching experience for children. This is the first step in creating an alternative school.

The project, headed up by Alan and Judie Brown, has developed the following statement:

"It is our goal to provide a safe, secure, and academically integrated learning environment. We will do this by teaching healthy ways to resolve issues and conflicts as well as presentation of wholistic environmental awareness. This will be accomplished by establishing a code of ethics for the children which comes from the heart. We will allow them to teach us, as we teach them through play, laughter, creativity and exploration of joy. Social awareness skills that they learn with us will give them the opportunity to make healthy choices and establish effective decision making skills through the use of Love and Logic. We will encourage them to explore their own truths, talents and abilities; teaching them respect for themselves, others and the environment."

Some of the areas to be covered: Environment, Health, Spirituality, Physical Activity, Creativity, Integrated Academics, Relaxation, Diversity, Music and Values/Peace Project.
